The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
