The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
